Albania to Boycott Ceremony for Nobel Prize in Literature

The Albanian Ambassador to Sweden was instructed by the Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs to boycott the ceremony for the conferment of the Nobel Prize in Literature. “Justification of war atrocities during the Yugoslavia break-up must not be rewarded.

This will solely strengthen the state of denial that must be overcome and strongly condemned,” Cakaj wrote, saying that this was consist with Tirana’s initial reaction to the fact that the Nobel Prize had gone to Austrian writer Peter Handke, who has allegedly denied the Serbian forces’ war atrocities in the Balkans in the 1990s wars. Albania is joining Kosovo and several other countries, who declared earlier their intention of boycotting the said ceremony.
