Albanian Authorities Deport Turkish Teacher Suspected as FETO Member

On the night of the first day of 2020, the Albanian authorities extradited to Turkey Turkish teacher Harun Celik, who was considered a member of the so-called Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ). Celik had earlier been denied political asylum to Albania. Electronic media reported widely on this case, with BIRN’s Balkan Insight claiming that the Turkish Intelligence Service (MIT) played a key role in Celik’s extradition to Turkey.

This was denied by the State Police spokesperson and by Prime Minister Edi Rama’s communications director Endri Fuga. Albanian authorities insisted that everything had been done in line with normal procedures for expelling a foreign national who had attempted to enter Albania by using fake travel documents.

PM’s Director of Communications also denied that Celik’s forced return to Turkey was a by-product of the close relationship between PM Rama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “This was a matter of legal procedures, not related to the Prime Minister’s Office,” Fuga said.

Opposition parties have expressed concern about whether due process was followed in Celik’s deportation. “It is the utmost priority for any democratic country, especially for the [sake of its] European Union integration processes, to respect these principles, rights, and obligations,” the Democratic Party stated on Twitter. Newspapers noted also a reaction of former German MEP Rebecca Harms on this development. In a Twitter posting, she called for “an independent investigation of this case and similar cases of abductions of Turkish citizens abroad,” saying that it “is urgently needed”
