Albanian DP Sues Mayors and Ministers Over 26 November Earthquake

The Democratic Party (DP) filed a criminal lawsuit in the Special Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK) against the former and current Socialist Party Mayors, Erion Veliaj, Vangjush Dako, Valbona Sako, and Artur Bushi, and against the Ministers of Interior and Education Sandër Lleshaj and Besa Shahini, in regards to the consequences of the 26 November 2019 earthquake.

They are charged with abuse of power, manslaughter, violation of equality in public bidding procedures, and passive corruption. Urging SPAK to launch the criminal proceedings without delay into the said lawsuit, the DP said that this is a test for SPAK to establish that the equality before the law applies to all, ordinary citizens and senior public officials alike. The criminal proceedings against the above would also bring to an end the impunity of senior officials, the DP argued.

In related news, DP Chair Lulzim Basha was in Durrës on Thursday to inspect the government’s effort to manage the post-earthquake situation. He said that the government had failed to properly manage the consequences of the natural disaster. He said that the earthquake-hit residents were still receiving utility bills for their uninhabitable apartments and homes.

A number of citizens told him they were yet to receive the rental bonuses. He said that a solution offered by the DP was the repealing of the concessions and PPPs for a total of the worth of €150mln and the use of that amount of money to compensate the Durrës residents and businesses since this region was hit the hardest by the November earthquake.
