Albanian President: Legally speaking, there will be no elections on 30 June

In a press conference held on Tuesday morning, President of the Republic Ilir Meta said the Electoral College’s ruling on rejecting the deregistering of a small political party from the local government elections had no bearing on the same electoral process. According to him, political pressure and blackmail influenced the said ruling. According to him, the presidential decree canceling the date of the local government elections was still valid and in force, and that only the Constitutional Court could decide on the same legal act. Meta also said that he was still waiting for the ruling majority to reflect in line with the decree.

According to him, political dialogue and respect for the rule of law was the only way to solve the crisis. He said that the canceling of the election date was meant to pave the way to dialogue between the parties, especially to help Prime Minister Edi Rama, who had sent out seven letters for dialogue.

Asked by reporters, Meta said that he would not resign from office and that he would stay in it until the last day of his mandate. Asked about the fact that the ambassadors and international officials have not spoken against the 30 June elections, Meta said that he could not speak on behalf of ambassadors and that the only institution that decided on elections date was the President’s Office. “Legally speaking, there will be no elections on 30 June,” he said
