Albania's 11th anniversary of NATO accession remembered

Political leaders on Saturday shared messages on the occasion of the 11th anniversary of Albania’s NATO accession. The President of the Republic Ilir Meta described the country’s membership in NATO 11 years ago as one of the biggest and most important events in the history of the Albanian state and nation.

He expressed gratitude to “all those men and women, in politics, but also in the military and security field, who led with vision, worked and realized this transformative and integrative project”. “A special thanks to the President of the United States, George W. Bush, who through his unforgettable visit to Tirana inspired and supported the joint efforts for the final realization of this major goal,” Meta said.

In her message, Minister of Defence Olta Xhaçka expressed appreciation for the Albanian Armed Forces’ successful engagement not only in international missions abroad but also in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. “Those 5,000 service members appointed in every corner of Albania to help every family and citizen in need, are today the strongest evidence of the great transformation that the Armed Forces has undergone by becoming a worthy force for a NATO member,” Xhaçka said. She thanked all those who contributed to realize this aspiration of Albanians, as well as the Allies, the United States in particular, who believed in Albania.

Democratic Party Chair Lulzim Basha in his reaction to this anniversary recalled the hard work and tangible contribution of the DP-led government to this historic achievement for the country. On this occasion, the United States Ambassador to Albania, Yuri Kim, said that “in the 11 years since Albania became a NATO Ally, the U.S. and Albanian forces have shed blood, sweat, and tears together in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Latvia,” adding that there will be a NATO facility at Kuçova soon.
