Albin Kurti Officially PM Designate, Deadline for Forming Kosovo Government

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, on Monday, officially appointed the leader of the Self-Determination Movement Albin Kurti as the Prime Minister-designate for the forming of the new government, by which the deadline of 15 days began for Kurti to agree on the post-election coalition with the second-placed Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) of Isa Mustafa.

Despite certain announcements, Thaci and Kurti did not meet on Monday, but rather the Kosovo President announced the decision on the appointment on his Facebook profile.

Kurti still does not have the majority for the forming of the new government, and Thaci entrusted him with the mandate as the leader of the Movement which had won the greatest support at the October early parliamentary elections.

So far, the negotiations with the LDK have not yielded results due to Kurti’s refusal to obligate himself that the ruling coalition will support Mustafa’s nomination at the next presidential elections.

In the event that Kurti fails to secure a majority for the forming of a government, it is not certain how things will develop further since the decisions are divided on whether Thaci should immediately call new elections or offer the mandate to another party.

The dilemma has existed ever since 2014 when the Kosovo Constitutional Court decided that the mandate for the forming of government could not be given to a party that has not won the greatest number of votes at the elections.
