Borell: Kosovo Recognition - Individual Stance of EU Members

The issue of recognition of Kosovo independence is an individual stance of each EU member state, EU foreign minister Joseph Borell declared in Pristina, news agencies report on Thursday.

After meeting with Kosovo president Hashim Thaci, Borell said he came to Pristina to offer EU cooperation and confidence in Brussels, in the hope to establish good cooperation in the future.

He said the EU is incomplete without the Balkans and that ending conflicts are a priority, as this will ensure safety and stability for all.

Thaci said that unity between the EU and the US is key for reaching a final agreement between Belgrade and Pristina.

However, Borell has a different opinion and warned that there are five EU members who don’t recognize Kosovo (Slovakia, Spain, Cyprus, Romania, and Greece) and that his task, therefore, is not to convince them to recognize it.

He underlined that the EU recognizes Kosovo and that, as it represents the EU, not a single country, it acts as an EU representative.

Borell will also meet with Serbian President AleksandarVucic on Friday in Belgrade.
