Borrell: Pristina-Belgrade Dialogue with EU Mediation Necessary

High Representative of European Union (EU) for Foreign Policy and Security Josep Borrell said on Thursday that the dialogue on normalization of relations between Pristina and Belgrade, led by EU, was necessary in order to guarantee the European future of both Serbia and Kosovo.

“The future of the whole Western Balkans, including Serbia and Kosovo, is European. EU is committed to supporting them at every step of their road. However, in order to make the European future into reality for their people, the dialogue with EU mediation cannot be avoided”, Josep Borrell wrote on his Twitter account.

Previously, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci said that he had no will to take part in the negotiation process led by Miroslav Lajcak, a special envoy from the EU for the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. Thaci emphasized that he had full confidence in American management of the dialogue, and added that they would successfully conclude this process.

Borrell’s spokesperson Peter Stano said earlier on Thursday that the agreement between Kosovo and Serbia must be in accordance with the EU laws, its values and in accordance with the international law, sustainable, acceptable also for the region and EU member countries.

“Special envoy (Miroslav Lajcak) is in constant contact with all relevant partners in order to hear their perspectives, expectations, and concerns, so the dialogue can start without any delays”, Stano said.
