Broken Windows on Croatian institution, Anti-Semitic Graffiti in Novi Sad

On Tuesday, police arrested a suspect for breaking the windows and writing nationalistic graffiti on the building of the Croatian Culture-Education Association Stjepan Radic in Novi Slankamen, in Vojvodina’s Indjija municipality on the previous evening. In an unrelated incident in Novi Sad, unknown perpetrators have written much anti-Semitic and Nazi graffiti, and both events faced harsh criticism from independent institutions, opposition parties, and NGOs.

The incident in Novi Slankamen occurred late in the evening on Monday, and a 51-year old man was arrested as the suspect. He was charged with causing national, racial and religious hatred and intolerance and he was put in detention for 48 hours after which he would be taken to the prosecution in Sremska Mitrovica.

In Novi Sad, in Satelit neighborhood, swastikas were drawn with spray, and mottos ‘Juden Frei’ and ‘Death to Communism’ and a number 88, a symbol for the Nazi salute Heil Hitler were written. During the day, on Tuesday, Novi Sad city service in charge of removing graffiti painted over the walls where these were written.

In that part of Novi Sad, there were cases of similar graffiti several months ago.

Ombudsman Zoran Pasalic asked on Tuesday of Interior Ministry (MUP) additional information about the incident in Novi Slankamen.

“Due to specifics of the situation” the ombudsman requested of MUP to inform him also about the measures they have taken, no later than 15 days since the letter was received.

Commissioner for Protection of Equality BrankicaJankovic condemned the incident in Novi Slankamen.

The announcements, as reactions to these two incidents, were also sent by Alliance for Serbia (SzS), Democratic Party (DS) and others.

“If the circumstances under which the incidents have occurred are not revealed, it would be a serious reason for suspicion that behind all of that are actually those who are obliged to reveal the perpetrators of these transgressions”, Vojvodina branch of DS emphasized.
