Djokovic’s Father Poses with Disgraced Austrian Far-Right Politician

The father of one of the world’s best tennis players, Novak Djokovic, has given a new dimension to the phrase “tennis parents” as a colloquial term for tennis players’ mothers and fathers who have gained notoriety for their behavior.

Srdjan Djokovic, Belgrade media reported on Wednesday, recently hosted the former Austrian Vice-Chancellor and former leader of the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) Heinz-Christian Strache, who was forced to resign last May after he was caught on video apparently offering business deals in exchange for friendly media coverage.

Strache took pictures with Srdjan Djokovic during his stay in Belgrade and posted those pictures on his Facebook profile.

“With Srdjan Djokovic - the father of tennis legend Novak Djokovic - in Belgrade in front of an extremely impressive collection of his son’s cups, which is currently the second on the [ATP] List,” Strache posted.

Strache, while he was the leader of the FPO, before each election in Austria courted the votes of many Austrians of Serbian descent, the descendants of Yugoslav “guest workers” who settled in the country in the 1960s and 1970s and later on. Strache, who is known, among other things, for his Islamophobia, gambled on the opposition to Kosovo’s independence, which was his main argument for attracting the votes of the Austrian Serbs.
