DP Chair Basha Attends EPP Congress: Resolution Passed on the Deep Political

Democratic Party Chair Lulzim Basha is currently participating in the European People’s Party Congress taking place in the Croatian capital, Zagreb. As per a request filed by the DP, the Congress approved on Wednesday afternoon a resolution on the political situation in Albania.

The resolution recognizes the fact that Albania is facing a deep political crisis and, in these regards, the EPP urges the governing and the opposition parties to undertake any effort necessary to overcome the crisis through dialogue. According to the resolution, the EPP supports the DP in its efforts to address the legitimate concerns and European aspirations of the people of Albania. The document urges the implementation of the electoral reform in line with the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, recognizing the necessity of the political will in order to achieve free and fair conditions. The resolution also emphasizes that vote-buying actions and involvement of organized crime in the elections is unacceptable by European standards and calls for tangible progress and outcome in the timely and successful prosecution of all culprits including politicians, officials, and criminal gangs associated with vote-buying.

The phenomenon of people with criminal records running for office or being appointed to public functions is also strongly criticized, and Albania is urged to swiftly establish the specialized structure to combat corruption and organized crime. DP Chair Lulzim Basha also addressed the plenary session of the Congress on Wednesday. “What we are working towards is a truly transformed Albania. We believe that reforms need to be in line with EU law. This will not happen quickly and not with the Rama government,” Basha stressed. He said that his party’s vision and a plan was a prosperous Albania working with the EU and its neighbors. “Pick up any foreign policy journal today, and the EU has been proclaimed dead, as well as the liberal democracy. However, I come today to you with a different message – Albania is a country that still believes in these values, openness, and co-operation, in a strong and well-functioning EU,” Basha said.

In a Facebook posting, Basha said he had met Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković on the margins of this event. According to Basha, he had discussed with Plenković the steps needed to overcome the political crisis in the country, which is considered by European Union (EU) member states as a serious obstacle to the launching of Albania-EU membership talks. “We agreed to coordinate our actions and decisions in order to do the homework needed to kick off the membership talks. PM Plenković assured me that his country will keep being a staunch advocate of Albania in the EU accession process,” Basha wrote. According to him, the lawful implementation of the justice system reform and the electoral reform and its enforcement as per the German roadmap are the only guarantees for rule of law institutions, cutting off the ties between politics and crime, ending impunity, and ensuring free and fair elections.
