DP Chair questioned by prosecutors on U.S. lobbying efforts

Democratic Party (DP) Chair Lulzim Basha appeared before Tirana prosecutors on Wednesday to be presented with the charges against him in regards to the investigations on the suspected affair related to the DP’s lobbying efforts in the United States.

Basha, along with former DP officials Arben Ristani and Ilir Dervishi, is charged with fragmented financial actions and transactions to avoid reporting as per the legislation on the prevention of money-laundering, and falsification or use of false seals, stamps or forms or the presentation of false circumstances in the forms addressed to state structures.

Basha was first called to appear before prosecutors on Monday but refused to do so. In comments to journalists on Wednesday, he said prosecutors had no evidence whatsoever against him and his colleagues, adding that these charges against them were only intended to distract the public from the publications of intercepted phone calls by German newspaper Bild allegedly incriminating Prime Minister Edi Rama and other officials.
