DP sends another letter to Prosecution on Socialist Mayors suspected of hiding

The Democratic Party (DP) accused on Wednesday the General Prosecutor’s Office of defending the three Socialist Party (SP) mayoral candidates and Mayors Valdrin Pjetri, Agim Kajmaku, and Mark Babani. The DP thus sent another letter demanding the GP’s Office start the launching of investigations into the three above-mentioned SP officials.

The letter follows three previous requests already sent to the GP’s Office by the DP, for the consideration also of the High Prosecutorial Council, the U.S. Embassy, the European Union Delegation, the OSCE Presence in Albania, and the Council of Europe office in Tirana. In a press conference on Wednesday, DP’s Secretary General Gazmend Bardhi said the SP officials in question had criminal records and should thus be removed from office (Pjetri has already renounced his victory in Shkodra) and be criminally prosecuted for forgery.

He accused the prosecution of failing to enforce the law, dragging cases, and failing to provide the opposition with the information they have required as to the procedures followed in these cases.  Bardhi also added that the prosecution’s inaction for over two months was an attempt to defend Prime Minister Edi Rama’s incriminated people with procedural red tape and delays.
