Can Ukraine give up part of Bakhmut to buy time?

Philip Ingram, a former senior military intelligence and security officer, told Sky News that Ukraine may have to give up some territory around the eastern city of Bakhmut to "buy time".

This would allow Kiev to send its "best troops" to train in the new tanks and combat vehicles that have been pledged by many Western allies.

He added that the movement of an elite tank unit in the Luhansk region could suggest "that this is where the Russians are potentially planning some form of spring counteroffensive."

Ingram said: “There have been reports of movement from the Russian 2nd Motorized Rifle Division, which is part of the 1st Guards Tank Army - which was destroyed in their attack on Kiev almost a year ago now.

"They've moved down into the Luhansk region, but if they do move there, that would suggest that's where the Russians are potentially planning some form of spring counteroffensive."

It also added that the Russians will likely "want to do something before these Western tanks that we keep hearing about are deployed in the area."
