EU concerned about expulsion of activists from Serbia

The European Union has expressed concern over the expulsion of a group of civil society representatives from Serbia.

A group of fourteen activists attending an international conference in Belgrade were arrested on the pretext of posing a “security risk.” They were also banned from entering Serbia for a year.

The group of deportees includes citizens of the European Union and countries in the region.

“Civil society plays a vital role in the development of a healthy and democratic society. These are values that are not only at the core of the European Union, but also of the future of Serbia as a candidate country and its citizens. Measures taken in the interest of national security must be carried out in accordance with the Serbian legal framework and in compliance with European and international human rights standards. Such measures must not result in the restriction of the freedoms of individuals, including foreign nationals,” said Guillaume Mercier, spokesperson for the European Commission.

Among the expelled activists are also Croatian citizens, which has caused relations between Zagreb and Belgrade to sour. The Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recommended its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to Serbia.

The expulsion of foreign nationals from Serbia came amid massive anti-government protests in the country, organized by students. Belgrade authorities regularly accuse the West of being behind these protests./RTK
