The EU invites Kosovo and Serbia to end "immediately" the inflammatory rhetoric
The European Union has invited the political leaders in Kosovo and Serbia to immediately end the inflammatory rhetoric and act responsibly. The EU has expressed concern about statements in which war and conflict are mentioned, and has added that "I will hold political leaders responsible for any escalation of the situation in the region".
This is stated in the statement of August 14 of the EU, sent by the spokesperson, Peter Stano.
"The recent increase in inflammatory rhetoric by the officials of Kosovo and Serbia, in particular the statements about the war and the conflict in the Western Balkans, are of great concern. "Senior politicians from both sides will be held accountable for any escalation that could lead to any escalation of tensions and potentially violence in the region," the statement said.
It states that both sides must "immediately end hostilities between them and inflammatory statements, as well as act responsibly".
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe, that in the northern municipalities of Kosovo, on July 31, there was a risk of the situation escalating into an armed conflict, "due to the fear injected by Belgrade and because of the plans made in Raska and Belgrade".
The President of Serbia, Akeksander Vučić, said that there is information about plans that the "liquidation of our people" is being prepared in the north of Kosovo, referring to the Serbian population living in Kosovo.
A day after this statement, Prime Minister Kurti said that when officials in Belgrade, including the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, talk about violence and murder in Kosovo, they talk about themselves, "they talk about their imagination and thoughts".
The EU says that all open issues between the two countries should be addressed through dialogue.
