Britain tightens rules: Immigrants who enter illegally will not receive

The British government has decided that migrants who arrive in the country illegally, mainly via the English Channel in dinghies, will not be granted British citizenship “in principle.” The new guidelines , published on Monday by the Home Office, state that applications for citizenship from people who have entered Britain illegally will be rejected, regardless of how long they have been in the country.

This move is seen as a continuation of the policies of the previous Conservative government, while Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing pressure to toughen immigration policies, especially after increasing support for Nigel Farage's anti-immigration "Reform" party.

However, the decision has been met with opposition, even within the Labour Party. MP Stella Chrissy has called the policy unfair, arguing that if someone has been granted refugee status, they should have the opportunity to gain British citizenship.

On the other hand, immigrant rights organizations, including the "Free Movement", have warned that this measure could hinder the integration of refugees into British society.

Starmer's government has abandoned a previous plan to deport irregular migrants to Rwanda, but has pledged to reduce immigration levels. According to the British Home Office, in 2024 more than 36,810 people entered Britain via the English Channel, a 25% increase compared to the previous year.
