"Bread, work and freedom"/ The Taliban violently disperse the rare

The Taliban have assaulted women who came out in a rare rally in the Afghan capital, days before the first anniversary of the hardline Islamists' return to power.

Since taking control on August 15 last year, the Taliban have revoked the rights women had enjoyed during two decades of US intervention in Afghanistan.

Dozens of women marched in front of the education ministry building in Kabul chanting "bread, jobs and freedom". The Taliban dispersed them by forcing them away and shooting them in the air.

Protesters held a banner reading "August 15 is a black day" as they demanded rights to work and political participation.

"Justice, justice. We're fed up with ignorance," they chanted, many of whom were not wearing veils.
