Dozens missing after migrant boat sinks off Greek island

Greek authorities said they were searching for up to 50 people missing after a migrant boat capsized overnight.

The coast guard said on Wednesday that 29 people, all men, had been rescued from the sea 33 nautical miles (61 kilometers) east-southeast of Karpathos, a southeastern island between Rhodes and Crete, Euronews reports .

Those rescued were from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. They told authorities there were about 60 to 80 people on board the ship when it went down in the Aegean Sea, the coast guard said.

Rescuers also said the ship had left the Antalya area on Turkey's southern coast and was heading for Italy when it crashed overnight.

Two coast guard patrol vessels, a Greek navy ship, an air force helicopter and at least three vessels sailing nearby were taking part in the search and rescue effort despite strong winds, a coast guard spokesman added.
