Protesters took to the streets once again to condemn police brutality over the weekend following the release of a video showing the violent beating by Memphis police that led to the death of 29-year-old Tire Nichols.

Demonstrators marched through New York City, Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland, among other cities across the country, holding up signs bearing his name and calling for an end to the abuses of authority, reports CNN .

Nichols could be heard screaming for his mother in the video of the Jan. 7 encounter, which begins with a traffic stop and continues to show officers repeatedly beating the young black man with batons, punching and kicking him.

He was then left slumped on the ground in handcuffs as 23 minutes passed before a stretcher arrived at the scene. Nichols was eventually hospitalized and died three days later.

The five Memphis officers involved in the beating — who are also black — were fired and charged in Nichols' death.

The unit they were a part of was disbanded, and state lawmakers representing the Memphis area began planning police reform bills.
