Expert Alexander Gabuev has outlined potentially worrying signs of Vladimir Putin's current state of mind following comments made by the Russian leader yesterday.
"Putin's statement about 'Ukrainian nationalists' shooting Ukrainian soldiers in the back to prevent them from deserting shows the challenge facing Kiev and the West: a reckless and emotional leader who has gotten himself into a terrible information bubble , " he said .
Gabuev has cited cases that, according to him, Putin's statements demonstrate a poor grasp of reality.
"Why is this important? Because some crucial decisions the Kremlin makes about war can be based on quality 'information' like Putin today. The fact that there is no impartial interagency process in Russia, but an emotional and ill-informed leader is negative.
This reality should be evident in the quiet discussions that Western supporters of Ukraine are having with leaders in Kiev. There is a danger of overestimating Putin's rationality and overlooking his growing detachment from reality as he tries to redefine Moscow's red lines. So far the West has managed to do it in a determined but cautious way avoiding doomsday scenarios, " the expert added.
