Nine Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli military strike in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian officials say. The Israeli military said it had acted to thwart major attacks by a "terror squad" of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).
During an attempt to arrest the militants, three opened fire and killed the Palestinians, while one of the four surrendered to the police.
"Security forces operated to surround the building in which the suspects were located." Two armed suspects have been identified fleeing the scene and have been neutralized," the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.
The IDF accused the militants of being "heavily involved in the planning and execution of numerous terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers."
According to the military, other Palestinian gunmen opened fire on troops during the raid. Troops responded with live fire and "hits were identified," he said, adding that he was looking into "claims of additional casualties."
PIJ and Hamas said their militants had targeted troops with firearms and improvised explosive devices. Gunshots and explosions could be heard in footage released by Palestinian media.
Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila said the situation in Jenin was "extremely critical". with many people injured.
Tensions have risen recently in the West Bank as the Israeli military continues what it describes as an anti-terrorist offensive.
At least 29 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank so far this year, including militants and civilians.
