Romanian President Klaus Iohannis resigns

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has announced his resignation, amid a push by the Romanian opposition to oust him after he remained in office despite the Constitutional Court's decision to annul the presidential election, which was won in the first round by right-wing, pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu.

Klaus said on February 10 that he would step down as president in two days. The Constitutional Court had asked him to remain in office after his term ended in mid-December due to the annulment of the election.

The Constitutional Court annulled the election two days before the second round between Georgescu and pro-European candidate Elena Lasaconi was to be held. The court cited state documents that allegedly showed that Georgescu, who ran as an independent candidate, had benefited from an unfair social media campaign, likely orchestrated by Russia.

Moscow has denied interfering in the elections in Romania. New presidential elections are scheduled for May 4 and if no candidate wins a majority, a second round will be held on May 18./ REL
