Estonia's Prime Minister resigns to become the EU's top diplomat

Estonia's Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, resigned from this position to become the European Union's foreign policy chief at the end of the year.

Kallas, Estonia's first female prime minister, handed in her official resignation to President Alar Karis during a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Tallinn on Monday.

Speaking about Kallas' time as prime minister, for a full three and a half years, Karis said that "it was a time full of crises, such as: the coronavirus, the economic recession and the war in Europe, when Russia destroyed the previous security picture with its aggression in Ukraine".

The resignation of Kallas automatically caused the resignation of her tripartite cabinet.

However, he will continue to serve as a technical government until the new cabinet is sworn in - most likely in late July or early August.

In the top position in the EU, Kallas will succeed the current head of foreign policy, Josep Borrell.

One of her tasks is expected to be mediation in the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

In the past, Kallas has spoken in favor of the European integration of Kosovo and has also emphasized the need to improve relations with Serbia, saying that a secure Western Balkans "is in the interest of all of Europe"./ REL
