President-elect Donald Trump announced that he would give the top job to his campaign manager Susie Wiles.
The appointment is the first of many that Trump is expected to announce over the next few days as he prepares to return to the White House.
A bodyguard of the president, the chief of staff wields great influence in the administration; manages the White House staff, organizes the president's agenda, and maintains contacts with other government departments and lawmakers. The decision to appoint Wiiles is considered historic.
"She is the first female head of the cabinet. When I heard it today, I thought! Wow, this has never happened before," said Gretchen Carlson, former Fox News anchor.
A Republican strategist and lobbyist, Suzi Wiles is one of Trump's most loyal advisers, whom the 78-year-old credited for his victory and said she would make the country proud.
"Suzi likes to be behind the scenes, but she's not behind the scenes."
The 67-year-old, who previously worked on Ronald Reagan's campaign and helped Republican Gov. Ron De Santis win in 2018, joined the Trump campaign in 2015 and served as a senior adviser in his first administration.
People who have worked with her predict that Suzi will provide stability and wise counsel to Trump in the White House. Sources cited by the media claim that Trump is also considering appointing the former envoy for the Balkans, Richard Grenell, to the post of secretary of state, while important positions are expected to be awarded to his supporters, billionaire Elon Musk and the grandson of the former -President Kennedy, Robert Jr.
