Health Ministry: More than 30,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza

More than 30,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza since October 7, the Hamas-run health ministry says.

This number equates to about 1.3% of the territory's 2.3 million population, writes the BBC . The ministry says most of those killed were women and children.

In its daily update on Thursday, the ministry said 81 people had been killed in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 30,035.

The actual death toll is likely to be much higher as the count does not include those who did not reach hospitals, among them thousands of people still missing under the rubble of buildings hit by Israeli airstrikes.

More than 70,000 injured people have been registered by the Gaza Ministry of Health (MOH), which is the only official source for casualties. His data is cited by UN agencies and other international institutions.

Asked for its estimate of the number of casualties and the destruction of civilians and fighters, the Israeli military told the BBC only that "the number of terrorists killed is approximately 10,000".

The Palestinian Red Crescent also contributes data.

During this war, it has been more difficult than ever to report numbers because of the overflowing killings, fighting in and around hospitals and clinics, and poor internet and phone connectivity.

However, if and when a long-term ceasefire is agreed or the fighting ends, efforts to find bodies and trace the missing should allow for a clearer picture of the number of dead, including the number of combatants. The UN and human rights groups, as well as the Israeli military, can be expected to conduct their own investigations.
