Palestine cancels agreement with Israel / Returns 1 million vaccines, expiring soon
The Palestinian Authority has canceled an agreement with Israel, which provided for at least 1 million Pfizer vaccines to be used in the West Bank and Gaza.
The sudden return came after officials inspected the first delivery of nearly 90,000 doses on Friday afternoon, the Palestinian Minister of Health said.
"It was found that the doses did not comply with the technical specifications, as previously agreed, and that their expiration date was near," said Minister Mai Alkaila.
He added: " For this reason, we met with Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh and a decision was made to cancel the agreement.
In a statement, the Israeli government acknowledged that the vaccines "will expire soon." Alkaila said Israel had told Palestine that the vaccines expired in July or August, but it turned out that the real date was June.
Nearly 450,000 Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza have received an anti-covid dose so far, while more than 270,000 citizens a week have been fully vaccinated.
