Major floods in Australia, tens of thousands of citizens have to be evacuated
Tens of thousands of residents will be evacuated from their homes in Sydney after torrential rain and flooding in Australia's largest city. Meanwhile, the roads are blocked by the heavy rains.
"This is a life-threatening emergency," said Stephanie Cooke, emergency services minister for the state of New South Wales.
In a press conference, she said they are facing risks on several fronts, such as river flooding and coastal erosion.
Sydney's main dam had also begun to overflow overnight, a further concern for authorities.
Cooke said it was a "rapidly evolving situation" and warned that people should "be prepared to evacuate rapidly".
In the past 24 hours alone, 83 have been rescued from flooding by emergency services, she said.
Experts say the flood emergency has been exacerbated by climate change and a La Niña weather phenomenon. A La Niña develops when strong winds blow warm Pacific surface waters away from South America and toward Indonesia. Instead, cooler waters rise to the surface.
In Australia, a La Niña increases the likelihood of rain, cyclones and cooler daytime temperatures.
