Former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, who revealed extensive US intelligence surveillance operations, has received Russian citizenship.

The decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

Snowden, 39, has lived in Russia since exposing the National Security Agency (NSA) program that affected millions of Americans in 2013.

In 2013, he spoke publicly about the US agency's domestic and international operations, as well as his workplace.

American authorities have been seeking his return to the United States for years, where he faces espionage charges.

Snowden has not made any public comments.
