Russia tells its citizens to avoid travel to the West

Russia said on Wednesday that relations with the United States are so confrontational that Russian citizens should not travel to the United States, Canada and some European Union countries, as they risk being persecuted by American authorities.

Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said relations with the US are on the verge of breakdown.

"In the context of growing confrontation... trips to the United States - privately or for official purposes - carry serious risks," Zakharova said, Reuters reports.

"We urge you to continue to refrain from travel to the United States and its allied satellite states - including, first and foremost, Canada and European Union countries with some exceptions - during these holidays," she said.

Russian and American diplomats say relations between the two countries are worse than at any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, due to disagreements over the war in Ukraine.

They reached the peak of the crisis last month, when the US and UK allowed Ukraine to use their missiles to strike Russian territory.

As a result, Russia lowered the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.

Russia and the US constantly accuse each other of arresting their citizens on trumped-up charges./ REL
