Russia claims about 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers surrendered to Azovstal
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has said that almost 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been handed over to the Azovstal plant in Mariupol.
Shoigu said : "The blockade of the Azovstal plant continues ... The nationalists are surrendering. At present, 1,908 people have surrendered their weapons. "
Azovstal was the last center in Russian-occupied Mariupol and became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance under relentless Russian bombing.
The previous figure given by the Russian Ministry of Defense on Thursday was 1,730 Ukrainian soldiers. However, there is no evidence of more people leaving the plant as of Thursday.
Shoigu also said 177 civilians had been evacuated from the plant, but he seems to have talked about the total that came out last week.
This figure can not be independently confirmed. Ukraine has claimed that more than a million people were forcibly expelled from parts of the country that were under its control before the Russian occupation began.
