The US Embassy in Sarajevo warned on Friday against the Republika Srpska government's announcement that it will draw up an agreement within 30 days to be sent to Bosnia's other entity, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for "peaceful separation".
The embassy's response states that this means the secession of the Republika Srpska, describing it as "a dangerous, irresponsible, anti-Dayton action that endangers the territorial integrity, sovereignty and multi-ethnic character of Bosnia and Herzegovina. These are core American interests. The United States will protect them, among other things, by holding accountable those who put them at risk."
The Government of the Republika Srpska announced the drafting of the "agreement" on the eve of the session of the United Nations General Assembly, which adopted a resolution declaring July 11 the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide in 1995.
The American embassy said that the president of the Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, and his government tried to explain the decision with a bunch of lies and misinformation designed to scare the public opinion in the Republika Srpska, to drag it down this dangerous path.
"The facts are simple and clear. There is no international conspiracy to abolish Republika Srpska, and Mr. Dodik cannot single out a single statement by any American official calling for its abolition."
The reaction states, among other things, that the Constitution of Bosnia does not grant the right to secede to its constituent units.
"Republic of Serbia can only exist within Bosnia and Herzegovina. The separation or 'separation' of the Republika Srpska does not mean independence for it or the end for Bosnia, but the end for the Republika Srpska", the reaction says.
The activities of Mr. Dodik, it is further said in the reaction, put at risk the future within the Euro-Atlantic institutions that the citizens of Bosnia want. The path he proposes will ensure that the citizens of Republika Srpska, their children and grandchildren will not have the peaceful and prosperous life in the democracy that they deserve, says the reaction of the American embassy in Sarajevo.
Milorad Dodiku has often threatened in the past that Serb-controlled territories would secede from Bosnia and join neighboring Serbia. He and several other Bosnian Serb officials are under sanctions from the United States and Britain, in part for jeopardizing a US-backed peace deal that ended the Bosnian war that left more than 100,000 dead. killed and millions displaced.
The European Union expressed concern over Republika Srpska's initiatives that conflict with Bosnia and Herzegovina's European path, including its divisive actions and rhetoric, which are calling into question the country's constitutional order, bloc spokesman Peter Stano said Friday.
"The member states have emphasized that the sovereignty, territorial integrity and constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina must be respected. Divisive ideas will only isolate their authors even more than they are already isolated and will bring more difficulties to the citizens who are being held hostage by the authors of these ideas and actions", said Mr. Stano./voa
