Subject to US sanctions, Ebrahim Raisi is elected the new president of Iran
Iran's ultra-conservative cleric and head of the judiciary Ebrahim Raisi has won the presidential election, the country's foreign minister said on Saturday.
Mohammad Javad Zarif made the announcement a day after Iranians voted in a race that was accompanied by boycotts and low turnout.
Raisi won 62% of the vote with about 90% of the votes counted from Friday 's election, poll officials said.
Victory over 'enemy propaganda'
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei hailed the election as a victory for the nation over "enemy propaganda".
"The big winner of yesterday's election is the Iranian nation because it has once again risen up against the propaganda of the enemy's mercenary media," Khameini said.
Outgoing moderate President Hassan Rouhani also said in a televised speech Saturday that his successor had been elected, without mentioning the winner.
"I congratulate the people for their choice," Rouhani said. "My official congratulations will come later, but we know who got enough votes in this election and who is elected today by the people."
The other contestants - including two ultraconservative candidates, Mohsen Rezaei and Amirhossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, and a reformist Abdolnasser Hemmati - expressly praised Raisi.
Raisi will succeed Rouhani, who cannot run again after serving two consecutive four-year terms. He leaves office in August.
Raisi, a close ally of Mr Khamenei who has vowed to fight corruption, is subject to US sanctions over his alleged involvement in the execution of political prisoners decades ago.
