German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has welcomed the end of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, calling it an important step towards a better future for the Syrian people.  "Syria has suffered for many years under Assad's brutal violence and oppression," Scholz said Sunday (08.12.2024) evening in Berlin.

Scholz stressed that Germany stands with Syrians who are seeking to rebuild their country and begin the process of national reconciliation. “ The Syrian people have gone through great suffering, but now they have a new opportunity to embark on the path of reconstruction and reconciliation,” he said.

The German Chancellor warned that the challenges are not over yet. He expressed concerns about radical and extremist forces that could hinder the transition process. “It is important that Syria establishes law and order as soon as possible, while guaranteeing the protection of all minorities and religious communities,” Scholz said.

Scholz underlined that Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty are essential for the country's future. He called for an inclusive process of national dialogue and a final political solution. "A free and secure Syria can only be achieved through a peaceful transition and a political solution," he declared.

Germany, Scholz said, is committed to helping in this process together with international partners, based on UN Security Council resolutions. “We will do everything in our power to support the Syrian people at this historic moment,” Scholz concluded.

Scholz posts message in Arabic

The German Chancellor's message was published on social media not only in German and English, but also in Arabic, on the X platform. In this way, the Social Democratic politician addressed the approximately 970,000 Syrians living in Germany, most of whom have fled their homeland due to the bloody civil war.

On December 8, 2024, after a swift 11-day offensive by rebel forces, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was ousted from power and forced to flee Damascus. Reports indicate that he and his family have been granted political asylum in Moscow, Russia.

In parallel with the change of power in Syria, thousands of Syrians took to the streets of Berlin to celebrate over the weekend. Many Syrians drove through the streets in cars honking their horns. / DW
