Trump: I have half a day to find a solution to the conflict in Ukraine

New US President Donald Trump said he still had "half a day" to keep his promise to end the conflict in Ukraine. His comments came after he recalled a campaign pledge to resolve the fighting within 24 hours of returning to the White House.

During his inauguration, reporters asked him if he would be able to fulfill this promise. “Well, it’s only half a day. I have another half a day left. We’ll see,” Trump said humorously, speaking from the Oval Office.

Possible meeting with Putin
Trump reiterated his desire for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the aim of reaching a diplomatic solution. He stressed that the war between Russia and Ukraine should never have started.

“We’re going to try to resolve this as quickly as possible,” Trump said. He also cited the good relationship he had with Putin during his first term, adding: “I hope he wants to make a deal.”

Rubio: Parties must make concessions
Secretary of State-designate Marco Rubio stressed that ending the conflict would require both sides to compromise. According to him, a solution would only be possible when Russia and Ukraine agree to "something" to end the hostilities.

Putin welcomes dialogue
Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, expressed his readiness to resume dialogue with the new US administration. He congratulated Trump on his inauguration and stated that Moscow is open to working on the basis of equality and mutual respect. Putin also stressed the importance of cooperation to prevent the escalation of global tensions.

The conflict in Ukraine remains one of the most sensitive issues in international politics, with high expectations for the new US administration in addressing it.
