Zelensky calls for creation of "European army": Russia is not

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Saturday for the creation of a European army to boost the continent's defense, while warning that Russia was "not preparing for dialogue" to advance possible credible peace talks.

Zelensky said Kiev had intelligence that Russia plans to send troops to its ally Belarus this summer under the pretext of training exercises, calling it a "new Russian province" that poses a direct threat to NATO border countries.

"We must build up Europe's armed forces so that the future of Europe depends only on Europeans and decisions about Europe are made in Europe," Zelensky said at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, in a sign of the US's seemingly wavering support for the region's security.

“Europe must become independent, united by common forces,” he continued. “Let’s be honest now, we cannot rule out the possibility that America might say no to Europe on issues that threaten it.”
