Socialist Party MP Plarent Ndreca speaks out against the arrest of Mayor Erion Veliaj.

In an interview with A2 CNN, Ndreca stated that the court should also analyze the damages he caused to the city of Tirana, as Veliaj, according to him, has another quality as an elected official.

"I have read the decision to some extent. It is a decision taken disproportionately in terms of what it represents for the Municipality and the Socialist Party. The damages caused to the city and the SP subject have not been analyzed. The code also defines it. Because imprisonment is an extreme measure. It has another quality before the law, it is exercising its duty. The termination of the mandate of an elected official by 160 thousand citizens should have been taken into consideration ," said Ndreca.

Veliaj was arrested at the Municipality office on February 10 as a suspect in the criminal offense of “Passive corruption of high-ranking state officials or local elected officials”, committed in collaboration (9 times) and “Laundering of the proceeds of a criminal offense or criminal activity”. The mayor’s wife, Ajola Xoxa, also appeared at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Center, and was placed under “house arrest” security measure.
