"The flamingos came after I came to power", Rama acts arrogant: No one

Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted to criticism of the government's environmental policies, arguing that the results of recent years show a significant improvement in nature protection in Albania.

During a meeting with European journalists, Rama stated that the return of flamingos and other bird species to Albanian lagoons is directly related to measures taken by the government after 2013, especially the 10-year hunting moratorium.

According to him, when the Socialists took over the country, Albania was considered one of the most problematic spots for illegal hunting, a phenomenon that had severely damaged wildlife. Rama said that a few years after the hunting ban, species such as flamingos and pelicans began to return to their natural habitats.

"When I came to government, when we took over the government, there were no flamingos there. Why? Because Albania was a hotbed of illegal hunting. We lost a lot of our wildlife because of illegal hunting and in the meantime the flamingos along with the pelicans and others started to come back a few years after we imposed a moratorium in Albania by declaring illegal hunting for 10 years, we adopted a moratorium on logging, which was illegal for 10 years in Albania. There was no permit for logging for 10 years.

"And you see from the satellite images where the place was and where it is today. Look at the records of where the wildlife or habitat is, where it was and where it is, and here are not things that I say and that you can verify. I know I'm not a pushover, I'm not a protester ," Rama said.

Finally, the Prime Minister also defended the tourism model that the government is promoting, arguing that elite and high-value-added tourism is more favorable for the economy and the environment than mass tourism, as it generates more income while exerting less pressure on the country's ecosystems and infrastructure.

"No one can lecture me or us about the environment, because we proclaimed, we created, drafted the first law, the first map of Albania's protected areas in 2017 and the first register and the first inventory and, just so you know, we found Albania with less than 15% of protected areas, while today we have about 25% protected areas. It is one of the countries with the largest area of protected areas. stated that elite tourism represents a more sustainable alternative to mass tourism, as according to him it brings more income with less pressure on the environment and infrastructure ", he emphasized.
