Rama attacks SPAK after Veliaj's arrest: This crossed every limit, justice

Prime Minister Edi Rama has attacked the justice system he so much praised, a day after the arrest of Erion Veliaj and several other officials close to his government. At an event marking the 105th anniversary of Tirana's declaration as the capital, Rama leveled accusations at SPAK, calling the process unacceptable and outside the standards of a rule of law.

Referring to Veliaj, the prime minister stressed that a man elected by the people cannot be arrested without trial, while adding that the indictment against him is based on an "anonymous novel" submitted in February of last year.

We are in a paradox: today we celebrate the anniversary of the capital, but its mayor is missing. His contract with the citizens has been terminated by someone I do not know by face. Whoever takes an elected person and closes him without trial, it is not clear to whom he is accountable, but certainly not to the citizens, ” he declared. Rama added that the presumption of innocence is not a principle that can be bypassed and that no one can be punished on the basis of a lack of remorse, comparing this practice to the time of the State Security.

He also denied claims that the government has influence over the judiciary, calling it false propaganda. “ Today only an idiot can say that we control the judiciary. We have given it the independence it has not had since 1912, ” Rama said.
