Berisha's message to immigrants: You are the authors of the first chapter

The head of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, started tonight's speech at the civic gathering with a message to immigrants and members of the Albanian diaspora wherever they are.

Berisha : Dear friends, tonight I want to address on your behalf, on behalf of DP, immigrants and members of the Albanian diaspora wherever they are.
First of all, I want to put aside a misunderstanding as a former president, former prime minister, I have to say that your name immigrants or diaspora is a diminution of what you really represent for Albania and the Albanian nation.
Because the vital importance you have for the nation, the role you have had in the history of Albania exceeds that of any other diaspora in the world.
That's why I wanted to make this clarification from the beginning.
You representatives of emigration and diaspora were the only voice of the Albanian nation for 45 years without a voice in the world.
You became the spokesmen for the freedom of an oppressed nation and contributed with all your means to the collapse of the dictatorship.
But the history of Albanian democracy is also an epic of heroes and brave men who left for emigration.
The epic courage of the students of December is often spoken of, and I guarantee you that epic courage it was.
But it is not talked about enough that this courage was inspired by your epic rebellion, by your epic uprising when you broke the Berlin Wall in Tirana and stormed the embassies of free countries.
You are not just immigrants, you left in the embassies.
You were the authors of the first chapter of democracy in Albania.
You were the fuse that exploded the Albanian anti-communist revolution. At that time, you risked 99 percent of your life for a 1 percent chance of freedom.
And that 1 percent turned into Albania's epoch-making dream of freedom, dignity and democracy.
