DP does not back down: No to changes to the Code without guaranteeing the vote

The Democratic Party has conditioned the CEC that it will not vote on the amendments to the Electoral Code, in order to gain more time in sending and returning the envelope with the ballot, if Albanian citizens of the diaspora without a passport are not also given the right to vote.

The Secretary General of the Democratic Party, Flamur Noka, insisted on this opposition request, arguing that a right granted by the Constitution cannot be limited by a bureaucratic deficiency such as the Albanian state passport.

"The diaspora must vote. According to the Constitution, every Albanian citizen who is in the fundamental state registry has the right to vote and no one can deny this right. The government cannot deny the right to vote to someone who is an Albanian citizen in the diaspora, regardless of the passport he possesses. Our biometric passport is modeled after the biometric passports of European countries or the USA and they are just as secure. Meanwhile, when you go to vote, it is enough for the civil status registry to confirm that you are the one presenting this reliable foreign passport, with the same data as in the registry and you can vote. There should be no Albanians who are allowed to vote and Albanians who are not allowed to vote. The moment an Albanian citizen is in the civil status registry, he must vote with the biometric passport he has of the country where he lives", Noka said on the show "Pa Censurë".

According to him, the opposition is clear about its vote if the Socialist Party does not fully accept this proposal.

"We will demand at all costs that every Albanian in the diaspora vote. That is determined by the constitution and not by Edi Rama. We will not approve any vote unless the right of every Albanian to vote is included ," said the Secretary General of the DP.
