Technical government for elections, DP's request echoed in Brussels,

The deteriorating state of democracy in Albania was one of the issues discussed in Brussels at the European People's Party Women's Forum.

EPP Women Vice President, Albana Vokshi, raised the issues of corruption and organized crime, the persecution of the opposition leadership, and the demand for a caretaker government before the elections during the EPP Women Congress.

Taking cue from the three recent resolutions adopted by the most important political organizations of center-right parties in Europe and the US, Ms. Vokshi mentioned the three main findings of the resolutions for Albania:

• The authoritarian and corrupt regime in Albania;

• Prime Minister Rama's absolute control over all powers and the politicization of the justice system

• The use of justice as a weapon for the political persecution of the opposition.

"In Albania, one person, the prime minister, has concentrated all power in his hands, and has reduced elections to a facade. Just 5 months before the 2025 elections, political persecution of opposition leaders has intensified with politically motivated arrests and charges, including the heads of the main opposition parties, Sali Berisha, Ilir Meta, Fatmir Mediu, as well as the imprisonment without evidence of political opponents Ervin Salianji or Fredi Beleri," said Ms. Vokshi during her speech at the EPP Women Congress, where she raised concerns about the government's deep links with organized crime. "The rampant corruption and the links between the socialist leadership and organized crime, as revealed by the Belgian and French authorities, are alarming. Drug cartels are using Albania for money laundering, while wiretapping has revealed agreements for vote buying, voter intimidation and election manipulation," said the vice president of the Women's Forum of Albania. European People's Parties.

Albana Vokshi said that only free and fair elections can guarantee that Albania is accepted as equal by the member states of the European Union. She informed the EPP Women's Congress about the demands of the adopted resolutions for the creation of a technical government according to the model of North Macedonia. "If you do not have the right to vote freely, all other rights are an illusion. There is no real democracy, there is no real stability!" - emphasized Ms. Vokshi, who called on the participants for support in the efforts to restore democracy in Albania.

The EPP Women in Brussels concluded with a strong message of support for Albania and the challenges it faces, highlighting the EPP’s commitment to democracy, human rights and European values. Prominent figures from European politics, including Commissioners Dubravka Suica, Jessika Roswall and Henna Virkkunen, as well as MEPs from various EU countries, participated in the congress proceedings. The DP was hosted by Ms. Albana Vokshi, Chair of LDGSH and Vice-President of EPP Women, and Ms. Elda Hoti, MEP of the DP.
