Vokshi in Washington: The state of democracy in Albania is alarming, we seek

MP and president of the Democratic Party's Women's Forum, Albana Vokshi, raised serious concerns about the state of democracy in Albania during her speech at the International Democracy Union (IDU) meeting in Washington.

Vokshi stressed that fair and free elections have not been organized in Albania since 2013, when Edi Rama took power. She cited a recent Voice of America report, which states that 1 in 4 voters have changed their vote under pressure from public administration misused by the socialist majority.

In her speech, Vokshi stated:
" Albania is under an authoritarian regime where constitutional and legal rights are violated. The Prime Minister has seized all powers, while corruption and organized crime are rampant."

She also criticized the justice reform, describing it as an instrument of the majority to persecute political opponents. Vokshi emphasized that there are political prisoners in Albania and warned that persecution could increase as the elections approach.

Speaking about the government's ties to organized crime, Vokshi presented a map of Albanian criminal gangs, which, according to her, help the majority in elections and have become a danger to Europe and Latin America.

She called for international support for free and fair elections in Albania, suggesting the Macedonian model of a caretaker government as a solution for guaranteeing a fair and credible process.

"It is time for the Albanian people to decide with their vote who will govern them. Democracy and freedom are universal rights that must be protected ," Vokshi concluded.
