BIRN: Trump's victory is eagerly awaited by both sides of Albanian politics
During his victory speech in Florida, Republican Trump told his supporters that America had given him "an incredible and powerful mandate."
"This is a political victory the likes of which our country has never seen," Trump said, reiterating campaign promises to work to make America great again.
The final result has not yet been released, but as the BBC reports, of the seven decisive states, Trump won North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, while he is also ahead in Michigan, Nevada and Arizona.
Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris has yet to address her supporters with a speech, but distraught supporters left her party hours before the final result was announced.
Trump's victory was received with similar enthusiasm by both the majority and the opposition in Albania.
Prime Minister Edi Rama posted on the X platform a photo from his office watching Trump's victory speech live, accompanied by a congratulatory message for "this extraordinary victory".
"I look forward to having the great privilege of working with the 47th President to further enhance our partnership for peace, prosperity and further progress," Rama wrote.
While the leader of the opposition, former prime minister Sali Berisha, called his victory a "triumph" and devoted a longer message to the presidential elections in the USA, calling the Democratic Party that he leads a "sister" of Trump's Republican Party.
"With their plebiscite vote, American citizens rose above hypocrisy, deception, attempts to dictate to their leader by all means and returned, chose for the bright future they deserve..." Berisha wrote in his profile on Facebook.
During the administration of Joe Biden, Berisha was declared 'non grata' by the US Department of State, while he has been under house arrest for months on charges of corruption. A congratulation for Trump also came from prison 313 signed by former president Ilir Meta, who is in custody accused of 'corruption' and 'money laundering'.
"Your triumph is a precious message that the American nation gives to the world that the fate of democracy is only in the hands of the citizens and how precious are the freedoms and fundamental human rights, democracy and pluralism, the rule of law and equality before the law even for the ordinary citizen in the face of the challenging anti-value efforts and goals of local, regional and global actors," says Meta's message, conveyed by the press office of the Freedom Party he heads, among other things./ BIRN
