September 16, International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer

This Monday, September 16, marks the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. In 1994 the General Assembly of the United Nations established September 16 as the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, which commemorates the date of signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer.

"On this World Ozone Day, let's commit to making peace with our planet. Let us commit to building on the success of the Montreal Protocol to show what international cooperation can achieve at its best," said the message of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The ozone layer, a fragile gas shield, protects the Earth from the harmful part of the sun's rays, thus preserving life on planet Earth.

Life on earth would be almost impossible from the destructive effect of these rays. Depletion of the ozone layer affects life on earth by creating the greenhouse effect and global warming, and the most concentrated ozone layer lies 20 – 40 km above the earth's surface.

As a result of the measures taken by the Montreal Protocol, the concentration of ozone-depleting substances has begun to decrease and the depletion of the ozone layer is decreasing.
