Accused of being a "threat to national security", Belgrade bans two

Serbia has banned 14 civil society representatives from several European countries, including two Albanians, from entering its territory for a year, arguing that they pose a "risk to national security."

Gazmir Memaj from the Mary Ward Loreto Foundation and Edlira Lilaj from the Help Organization in Tirana were in Belgrade on January 21 and 22, at the invitation of the Austrian Erste Foundation, to discuss strategies for non-governmental organizations to generate income.

Serbian authorities, through the secret service and police, interviewed the members and placed an entry ban stamp on their passports.

The two Albanians have informed the Albanian embassy in Belgrade, which expressed regret and requested additional information to notify the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEFJ).

The Ministry reacted today by summoning the Serbian Ambassador to Albania, Mr. Slobodan Vukčević, to express concern and regret over this action, which it described as incompatible with efforts for good neighborly relations and free movement. The MEPJ requested that the Serbian authorities review the decision and that such events not be repeated in the future. Meanwhile, the Albanian Embassy in Belgrade is closely following this case to ensure a solution.
