Albanian sentenced to 11 years in prison in Crete for gang rape and theft

A 48-year-old Albanian father of four has been sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison by the Court of Appeal in Crete, after being found guilty of several criminal offenses, including gang rape, theft, violence against police and illegal entry into Greece.

According to Greek media, the Albanian resident of Chania denied all charges, except theft, but failed to convince the court, which upheld the first-instance verdict. He will be returned to Grevena prison, where he has been held since his arrest in 2021.

How did the case come to light?
The incident was discovered on August 17, 2021, when an Irish tourist couple were robbed while swimming at night on Platanias beach. They used a phone tracking app and found the defendant along with another person, who had taken an iPhone, a wallet and a watch worth 500 euros.

Investigations revealed that the 48-year-old had also participated in the gang rape of a Swedish tourist on August 11, in the same area.

During the trial, which lasted about four hours, witness testimonies were read and two police officers testified in person. Despite the absence of the victims in court, the Albanian was convicted based on evidence provided by investigators.
