"Some EU countries think that Albania is not ready", Austria against the separation of our country from MV
Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg has spoken out against the partition of Albania and northern Macedonia on the road to the EU.
"Northern Macedonia has changed its name, has implemented extraordinary reforms and I think we should be very careful with the signals we are sending ," the minister said.
This position came after the statement of the Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, who proposed to continue the talks with Albania and to exclude Northern Macedonia, writes Euroactiv. The latter reports that Varhely's stance has been criticized by Austria.
Euroactiv writes that , "According to sources, some EU countries think that Albania is not yet ready to open accession negotiations and see the Bulgarian veto against Northern Macedonia as beneficial to the process."
Bulgaria is currently blocking accession talks with northern Macedonia on the basis of what Sofia sees as anti-Bulgarian policy by Skopje and attempts to steal Bulgarian history.
Austrian lawmakers called on the European Commission to put pressure on Bulgaria to lift its veto on opening accession negotiations with northern Macedonia.
