Tourism fever! Is there a risk that it will turn into a boomerang?
The foreigners who entered Albania until the end of June were 4.5 million. In relation to the 6-month period of the previous year, this number has increased by 34 percent, once again confirming the significant growth in tourism of Albania as a destination.
Our country continues to be a trend in social networks, where it must be said that most of the impressions are positive, but there are also those who do not see Albania as the destination they were expecting. Strongly marketed as a country with cheap prices, it seems that travelers with a low budget have found especially the southernmost part of the country "expensive".
In this mix of impressions, it remains unclear which way the scales will tilt at the end of this season and whether the number of tourists will continue to reach new peaks and the same rate of growth. Tourist operators in the country do not think that the effect of the prices that are circulating on social networks can turn into an immediate boomerang. Albania, according to them, continues to be the best offer in the price/quality ratio compared to all the countries in the region.
The real fear for the sector is related to the slow development of the sector, the inability to respond with infrastructure to tourist flows, traffic, a basic promotion that is left in the hands of social networks and that does not convey the real offer of Albania to the tourist.
Such a chaotic development has long-term sustainability in question, so a quick response is required.
Ksamil, the best example of a model that is developing badly
For the third year in a row, Ksamil is the tourist epicenter of the country. But while in the past two years, the impressions have been more positive, but always with a worsening tendency, it seems that this year the dissatisfaction is more pronounced.
The rating for the destination on TripAdvisor has dropped to 2.5 out of 5 which is the maximum and it must be said that this year's ratings are mostly negative. Tourists are amazed by the nature and the sea, but shocked by the prices and the density of beach chairs.
Businesses, driven by the influx of tourists, have rushed to invest in quality structures, while the demand itself has affected prices. The "Maldives of Europe", which became the touristic "face" of Albania, seem to be at a turning point that requires reflection.
"Ksamili, which is the best example you can give of the worst model for how mass tourism is affecting.
It can cause a stir and has brought large numbers of tourists, but its sustainability is not certain", says Roland Palushi, administrator of "EcoTour", an agency that has activities throughout Albania with foreign tourists.
Do bllokosh jetën e qytetit dhe do t’i shoqërosh me polici?
This was a first phase when Albania needed to be confirmed as a destination, but today that you have this, you are in a different moment", Vathi emphasizes. Another element is the disorganized information that orients the tourist.
Albania, a more complete package to maintain stability
Albania is being visited from North to South for nature, culture, cuisine, but especially in summer for the sand and the sea. Mass tourism, which is flooding in numbers, is a model that has no long-term sustainability if you do not enrich your offer with additional elements.
This can therefore bring more income spent per tourist, but also the year-round extension of tourism. Roland Palushi says that the sea and sand are definitely a tempting offer, which have awakened interest, but sustainable tourism is the combination of this offer with adventure tourism and rural areas.
One compensates the other in bad days, or they strengthen the offer as a destination in total, so in this perspective he says that the government should seriously consider the promotion of Albania and also as a way to stop the abandonment of rural areas, which has become a real problem .
"I think that the projects for the mountainous areas should start as soon as possible. The first is not to be empty that everyone is leaving, but also to create a balance between an image that can be broken and a more consolidated image.
Our tourists notice the difference when they pass from the mountainous areas, which is full of energy and positive feeling in an area on the coast, where this has been lost and you are simply in a business relationship", says Mr. Palushi.
According to Besnik Vathi, Albania seems to have given up on participating in the fair, contenting itself with the success it is currently experiencing. This low commitment to attract new markets that pay beyond sea and sand and that extend the effect to the economy is not the right way to have a sustainable tourism.
"We used to participate in 30-40 fairs, now in 2-3 of them. Why? Or do we not need? No, we need it, because you have to promote the country, promote tourism in all its breadth.
It is necessary to attract new countries that, in terms of number and quality, are the biggest generators of tourism in the world. We don't promote to attract tourism-generating countries in the world, we don't promote in countries outside of Europe, where they don't just bring tourists but visitors who pay and consume culture, that is, they are across the sea and this spreads the effect on the economy", - he underlines. he./ Monitor
