Albanian Railways cuts 47 jobs, maintenance workers affected

Another wave of layoffs has hit the railway sector in Albania. As of today, 47 employees of the Albanian Railways are officially unemployed, following a decision to reduce jobs as part of an internal restructuring.

According to sources from the employees themselves, they were verbally notified last Friday to report to the General Directorate of Railways in Durrës, where they were then handed a notice of termination of their employment.

Those affected by this decision are maintenance workers on the Bajza railway line, which is currently partially operational, transporting gravel to Montenegro 2–3 times a week.

Among those laid off are employees approaching retirement age, some of whom are only 6 months away from retirement. They express outrage that the cuts have only affected the maintenance sector, while technical and management staff continue to be employed.

The official dismissal notice states that the decision was made "due to job cuts according to the new organizational structure," and is based on previous decisions by the Administrator of the company "Albanian Railways sh.a" and the Supervisory Board.

Employees have the right to appeal within a 5-day period, according to applicable legal procedures.

Unofficial sources indicate that the railway line was kept operational only until June 13, to cope with the influx of pilgrims to the Church of Laç, after which it was considered inefficient for further operation./BW
